Obituary

Long time Winfield businessman, Kyger Don Veatch, died Saturday, September 30, 2017 while in hospice care at the Winfield Senior Living Center. He succumbed to a yearlong hard fought battle with cancer.

Kyger was dedicated to his customers and his generational family furniture store. He worked six days a week until September 6, when he fell at home. Kyger Don was the fourth generation to own and operate Kyger Furniture Company, established in 1883 by his great grandfather, Ira Kyger.

Born in Winfield to Margaret Kyger Veatch and Lloyd Veatch on August 6, 1931, Kyger attended Webster Elementary School and graduated from Winfield High School in 1949. Kyger was very close to his grandparents, Edgar Oldfather Kyger and Clara Belle (Cooper) Kyger, especially after the divorce of his parents. Kyger assumed management of the furniture store at the age of fourteen. It was common for him to run to the store at 921 Main Street during his lunch period from the High School when it was on Ninth Street. By age eighteen, Kyger was attending national furniture markets in Chicago. He also attended Southwestern College, as did his grandmother, Clara Kyger (one of Southwestern's earliest graduates), his father Lloyd, his wife Mary, and many of his sons, daughters and grandchildren.

Kyger grew up in Winfield and described his early years as being mischievous and fun. He was a wealth of information about Winfield and especially Main Street from the late 1930's to the present.

In January 1951, Kyger married his high school sweetheart, Mary Patricia Anderson, daughter of Lewis and Ruth (Skoog) Anderson. Mary, also from the WHS class of 1949, was a homemaker and loving, supportive mother. She died in October 1982.

Kyger is survived by four children from the union of Mary; Richard Kyger Veatch, (Charlotte Yianakopulos-Veatch) Susan Diane Veatch-Nugen, (Kent Nugen) Timothy Andrew Veatch, and Caroline Patricia Wilson, (Steve Wilson). Grand children are Kyger N. Veatch (Nicole), Ian Veatch, Michelle Nugen, Chad Nugen (Corinne), Austin Wilson (Amy), Hollianne Klotz (Jason), and Jaydon Wilson.

Great grandchildren include Benjamin Kyger Veatch, Zeb Nugen, Karlee Klotz, and Chase Klotz.

In later years, Kyger married Carol Montoya and later Arlene Dunbar. They both preceded Kyger in death.

Viewing will be at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield, Kansas from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Friday, October 6, 2017. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM, October 6, in Highland Cemetery. A reception afterwards, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, will be at the College Hill Coffee Shop, located at 403 Soward Street, located one block off College Street, near the Grace Methodist Church.

The family requests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be directed to the Southwestern College Leadership Program, care of Miles Funeral Service.
