Kenneth D
Hovey
February 13, 1929 – July 1, 2024
Kenneth Dwaine Hovey, 95, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, July 1, 2024, at the Kansas Veterans Home.
He was born at home to Hubert B. and Alma "Pearl" (McClure) Hovey on February 13, 1929 in Cambridge, Kansas. He was the third of four children. The family homesteaded and farmed in Cambridge until they moved to Grenola. Kenneth used to help his father haul their wheat to Oxford, Kansas to the mill to be ground into flour. It was a two week trip by horse drawn wagon. They would camp out on the prairie on their way to and from Oxford.
Kenneth moved to Winfield when he was in high school. He played football and was a member of the wrestling team before graduating from Winfield High School in 1948.
He was united in marriage to Edith "Joan" Peacock on March 4, 1956 in Winfield. Kenneth traveled the world with his family during his service in the United States Air Force. He also served isolated tours of duty in Greenland, South Korea, and Viet-Nam. After twenty five and a half years of service, Senior Master Sergeant Hovey retired with his family to Winfield. All of his children and grandchildren graduated from Winfield High School.
Kenneth worked at the Winfield Power Plant for the next 20 years. Upon retiring from the City, he worked many years for Daniels Ready Mix. He was a natural carpenter, like his father. He built and invented many things for his camper and home. He enjoyed using his talent volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. His children knew he could fix anything. When Roland was in second grade he brought home a small bell that belonged to his teacher. It had broken and Roland told the teacher that his dad could fix it, and to no surprise, he did.
He was a member of the United Brethren Church. He was also a member of the Long Range Bicycle Club in Spain, the Scuba Diving Club in The Philippine Islands, and the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling to craft shows to sell tole painted items that were made by Kenneth and painted by Joan. He also enjoyed traveling and camping all over the world, and watching, coaching, and supporting his children and grandchildren in any and all of their sport and school activities.
His family includes his daughter Cindy Joan Dyke of Winfield; his sons, Jeffrey Dwaine Hovey and wife, Julie of Omaha, NE; Roland Lee Hovey and wife Danielle of Winfield; his grandchildren, Grayson Hovey and wife, Annisa of Noblesville, IN; Jordan Hovey and wife, Elissa of Winfield; Madison Metzinger and husband, Devin of Arkansas City; Allyson Herlocker and husband, Aubrey of Stillwater, OK; Michael Pitt of Omaha, NE; and his numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Kenneth was preceded in death by his brothers Hubert and Robert "Bob" Hovey, his sister Lorraine Beck, and a son-in-law, Gary Dyke.
