Obituary

Keith C. DeWyke, a decorated World War II combat veteran, died Thursday, May 3, at the Kansas Veterans' Home in Winfield. He was 93.

Keith is survived by his brother George DeWyke of Wamego and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alice; wife, Helen; brothers, Donald and Ralph; and sisters, Dorothy and Neva.

Keith was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Stockdale, Kansas. He graduated from Garrison Rural High School, where he played both baseball and basketball. He was enrolled at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia when he enlisted in the Army in July 1943.

He entered the Army's Special Training Program to train highly qualified soldiers in a variety of technical skills. But Keith was shipped overseas in November 1944 as a replacement soldier with the 222nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Rainbow Division. The 222nd was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for its actions in southern France in January 1945.

Keith also was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star during his service in France. He was honorably discharged in 1946 at Fort Leavenworth. Keith returned to his studies, enrolling at Kansas State University and graduating with a degree in finance. He remained a loyal and devout fan of all K-State athletic programs his entire life.

Keith led a quiet and dignified life, like so many of the men and women who served in World War II. He was a loving husband to Helen and a kind uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
