Obituary

Kathleen A. Lewis, 89, of rural Winfield, died on June 7, 2022, at her home.

She was born on April 14, 1933, in Winfield to Anthony J. and Regina M. Groene, the ninth of ten children.  She grew up in Winfield and attended Winfield public schools, graduating from high school in 1951.

Kathleen married Walter H. Lewis on May 16, 1959.  The couple made their home in rural Winfield.  They had three children.  Walter was a farmer and rancher; he preceded her in death in 2006.

Prior to her marriage, Kathleen worked at the First National Bank of Winfield.  Later in life, she also worked as a dietary aide at St. John's College and the Winfield State Hospital before retiring in 1997.

She was very active in Floral 4-H, serving as a club leader for over fifteen years, and was a long-time member of the Kansas CattleWomen's Association.  Kathleen was an active volunteer for the Winfield Hospital Auxiliary in her later years, and she loved working in the waiting room and sewing dolls and clothes for young patients.  She was a very avid seamstress and made many clothes for her grandchildren and the children of friends.  Kathleen was a lifelong member of Holy Name Catholic parish and active for many years in the Holy Name Altar Society.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and six of her brothers and sisters.   She is survived by her children, Van, of Olathe; Lance and wife, Elizabeth of Midland, MI; and Lesa, of Winfield; three grandchildren, Vada Lewis of Phoenix, AZ; James Lewis, of East Lansing, MI; and Mary Lewis, of Midland MI; sister Pat Deibel, of Houston, TX; brothers, Tom Groene and wife, Gaye of Lawrence; and Bob Groene, of Sand Springs, OK; sister-in-law DeLoris Groene of Winfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, June 13, 2022, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.  Inurnment will follow at Wilmot Cemetery.  The Rosary will be prayed on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at 5:00 P.M., at Holy Name Catholic Church.  The family will receive guests following the Rosary at Parish Hall.

Memorials have been established in Kathleen's name for Holy Name Catholic Church and William Newton Hospital Auxiliary.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
