Karen Schifferdecker, 78, of rural Winfield, passed away Thursday morning, July 16, 2020 at her home.
Born June 13, 1942 on a farm in Stafford County, she was the daughter of Boyd and Mary (Elliott) Slade. She was raised and attended school in Stafford and Pratt County, graduating from Preston High School in Preston, Kansas. Following high school, Karen attended Kansas State University and Teacher's College in Emporia.
Karen was united in marriage to Donald Schifferdecker on August 18, 1963 in Pratt. The couple made their home in rural Winfield and had three sons, Alan, Jay, and Jon. Karen made a career as a devoted mother and homemaker until her children were grown. She then began substitute teaching until beginning a new career for Social Rehabilitation Services as a case manager. She retired in the early 2000's.
Karen was a member of First Christian Church in Winfield. She was very active with her church serving as the Christian Education Director and was involved with the youth groups. She was a wonderful seamstress and cook. Her chicken and noodles and chicken and dumplings were some of the best and her strawberry rhubarb pie was awesome.
Her family includes her husband Don of rural Winfield; her sons, Alan Schifferdecker of Austin, TX; Jay Schifferdecker of Silvergate, MT; and Jon Schifferdecker and wife, Kelly of Greenville, SC; her siblings, Lou Webb of Port Hueneme, CA; LeClair Slade of Denver, CO; Ronnie Slade of Ventura, CA; Jolene Montgomery of Olathe, KS; and her grandson Matt Schifferdecker.
In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by a sister Kay Slade and a brother Boyd Elliott Slade.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at Wilmot Cemetery north of Winfield. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Monday from 5 to 7 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
