Joyce Brookings, 89, longtime Udall resident, passed to her heavenly home on Saturday, October 13, 2018.
Joyce was born near Udall, Kansas to Luther and Irene (Cook) Ferguson. She was educated at Richland and Green Valley Schools before finishing her education at Udall. She was raised on a farm and was mother's helper doing the cooking and housework while her sisters did milking and farm chores.
Joyce married Clarence Brookings in Wichita in 1946 and they were married for 63 years before his passing. They made their first home in Wichita and moved to Udall a few years later remaining there until she went to reside at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield in 2017. Clarence and Joyce raised their three children on farms in the Udall area. They finally owned a farm and resided there for 44 years. Clarence moved Joyce into town in 2009 to be near her three sisters. He passed in 2010.
Joyce worked as secretary for the Superintendent of Udall schools for 22 years retiring in 1986. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, reading, and playing cards. She spent many enjoyable Sunday afternoons playing Rummikub with her sisters.
Joyce was a member of the First Congregational Church, now named Heritage Church, a member of the Dale Club, the Kansas-Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Association, and the Udall Cooperettes.
Preceding her in death were her husband and parents.
Family members remember her fondly for times spent cooking and playing games with them. Children: Gary (Glenna) Brookings, Janet (Harold) Schanbacher, Johnnie (Becky) Brookings, all of Udall; sisters: Barbara Seaman, Winfield; Jewell (Jay) Lacey, Mulvane; Caroline Miller, Silver City, NM; Linda Morton, Udall; grandchildren: Randall (Amy) Brookings, Peck; Kelli (Terry) Wilkerson, Skiatook, OK; Allen Schanbacher, Udall; Amy (Caleb) Guinn, Mulvane; Jennifer Brookings, Wichita; and Logan Young, Peck; Bryant Young, Peck; Chase Young, Peck; step-grandchildren: Rod (Brandi) Bonesteel and their son Ty; Robin Marshal and her son Braden and daughter Hallie; Sean (Rachel) Skov and their children, Rylee, Raigan, Michael, Becca, and Mason; great grandchildren: Kylie, Tyler and Kaitlin Wilkerson, Skiatook, OK; Zephyr Guinn, Mulvane; special cousin Dorothy Wells; Kenny Rhodes; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday October 18, 2018 at Heritage Evangelical Free Church in Udall. Interment will follow at the Udall Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday from 5 to 8 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 that evening.
A memorial has been established for Heritage Evangelical Free Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
