Jon Michael "Mike" Sanford, 75, of Atlanta, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2022.
Born April 26, 1947, in Benton County, Arkansas, he was the son of Edwin and Margaret (Taylor) Sanford. At the age of seven, Mike's mother passed away. He moved to Derby, Kansas when he was ten to live with his brother Bud and his wife, Nona. Mike graduated from Derby High School in 1965.
He was united in marriage to Carolyn L. Patton on December 3, 1965, in Wichita, Kansas. The couple made their first home in Wichita and on July 19, 1966, Mike was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country in the Vietnam War and upon his honorable discharge, returned to Haysville, Kansas. In 1972, the family purchased their first home in Haysville, and Mike went to work for Vulcan Chemicals in the maintenance department. He began his career at Boeing in maintenance in 1977, where he remained for 25 years, retiring in 2002. The family moved to Atlanta, Kansas in 1982. Following retirement from Boeing, Mike began working for the Burden School District. He retired from Burden in 2012 but remained a contractor for the school district.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Augusta. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, rodeoing, and roping.
His family includes his wife Carolyn of Atlanta; his son Guy Sanford and wife, Sara of Valley Center; his daughter Kim Hays of Winfield; his sisters, Clara Cheek of Webb City, MO; Marilyn Hammond of Carthage, MO; and his grandchildren, Dakota Soukup, Rhett Sanford, Cody Sanford, Waddie Sanford, Zane Sanford, and Steen Hays.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by three brothers, Bud Sanford, Fenton Sanford, and Eugene Sanford, a sister Pat Warren, and a sister-in-law Nona Sanford.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at the First Baptist Church in Augusta. Graveside committal honors will take place at 2:00 P.M. that afternoon at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Monday, May 2, 2022, from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening.
A memorial has been established in Mike's name for the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
