Johnie "Arlee" Withrow, 92, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, October 30, 2010 at William Newton Hospital.
Born March 14, 1918 in Hutchinson, Kansas, he was the son of Everett and Ola (Franks) Withrow. He was raised and received his education in Drummond, Oklahoma. After school he began working as a truck driver for his father.
Arlee was united in marriage to Farene McIntosh on July 27, 1941. He continued to drive trucks in the Oklahoma area while Farene taught school. On September 29, 1943 Arlee enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served his country in World War II. He was a Seaman First Class and a Gunner's Mate Third Class. While in the service he was stationed on the SS Lillian Wald, and the SS Silvester Pattle. He was honorably discharged from the service on December 03, 1945, after serving in the Pacific Arena. After his discharge from the Navy, the family moved to the Wichita area.
In 1947 the family moved to a farm near Burden. Arlee enjoyed farming the land until his retirement in 1987. Arlee and Farene remained on the family farm until July of 2010 when they moved into the Kansas Veterans' Home in Winfield.
He attended Burden United Methodist Church. He and Farene enjoyed gardening and traveling. Arlee would plant a very large garden so that he would have plenty of extra to share with local widows. The couple traveled the United States and Canada extensively, and were proud of the fact that they had visited every State in the country.

Many extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Arlee was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia and Zula.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M., on Saturday November 6, 2010 at Burden United Methodist Church. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established in Arlee's name for the Kansas Veterans' Home in Winfield and for the Burden United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
