Obituary

John S. Light, Jr., 96, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday evening, November 4, 2021, at Winfield Senior Living Center.

Born May 30, 1925, in Winfield, he was the son of John S. Light, Sr. and Elizabeth (Stott) Light. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1943.

After his graduation, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. In 1946, he enrolled at the University of Kansas, graduating in 1950, after which time, he became a junior buyer for the Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita, KS.

John was united in marriage to Donna May Alley in 1947.

In 1963, he purchased the Winfield Electric Co. from his father, where he was the owner and operator until selling it in 1987.

Not being fond of Kansas winters, he & Donna retired to Brownsville, TX, where they enjoyed 17 more years together. Donna preceded him in death in 2005, and John relocated back to Winfield in 2012.

John was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Winfield Masonic Lodge, and the Daylight Donut Shop's infamous Men's Morning Coffee Group.

John enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and watching his Kansas Jayhawks play college basketball.

He is survived by his son, Steve Light and wife, Susie of Winfield; son, Tom Light and wife, Lyn of Bedford, TX; his grandchildren, Adam Light of Plano, TX; Regan Light of Dallas, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by an infant son, Lawrence Light; his son, Doug Light of Brownsville, TX; his brothers, Robert and Bradley Light; and his sister, Ann Light Burns who recently passed away on November 17th, 2021.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Highland Cemetery at a later date.  Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.
