JOHN "ROBERT" KING, 92, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday evening, January 23, 2013.
Born on a farm north of Winfield on July 30, 1920, he was the sixth of nine children born to Thomas "Ervin" and Angeline (Knox) King. He was raised and educated in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1938. He worked on a local dairy farm as a young man.
Robert was united in marriage to Mary Marie Deal in Newkirk, Oklahoma on December 17, 1941, directly after the war broke out. He entered the United States Army in July 1942 and was assigned to the 669th Medical Clearing Co. He served two overseas tours, spent time in New Jersey, New York City, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, France, Germany and the Aleutian Islands. Robert was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in November 1945, as the war had come to an end.
The couple lived in the Winfield area, where they raised their three sons. Robert worked at Gott Manufacturing. In 1955, Robert moved his family to Calilfornia where worked as a logger. After a year, however, they decided to move back home. The couple made their home in Floral, north of Winfield. Mr. King worked at Boeing in Wichita. He retired from Boeing on January 31, 1983. Robert and Mary decided to build a home in Pineville, Missouri and then moved to ElDorado Springs, Missouri in 1992. In 1996, they decided to come "home" again and settled in Grenola, Kansas. In 2001, they moved to their final home north of Winfield. Mrs. King preceded Robert in death on April 6, 2002.
Robert was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #10 in Winfield. He loved farming, taking care of the cattle and chickens. He also enjoyed tending his garden of tomatoes, melons, squash and cucumbers. He loved building and remodeling homes, and took pride in building his barn, garage, storm cellar and chicken pens at his home north of Winfield.

His sons: Robert King and wife, Meryl of Winfield; Larry King and wife, Mary of Winfield; and Joseph King and wife, Judy of Augusta;
His sister: Martha Spencer of Winfield;
His brother: Ralph King of Wichita;
His grandchildren: Erik King, Greg King, Marla Perry, Tanya Austin and April Holder; and
His 8 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Robert was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond "Scotty" King and Roy M. King, and his sisters, Esther Friend, Inez Foster, Edith Wells, and Thelma Brown.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery north of Arkansas City. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon, January 27 from 2 to 4 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in Mr. King's name for Harden Hospice in Winfield and for Grandview United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
