JOHN H. GROOM, 78, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, February 27, 2014 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.
Born on April 1, 1935 in Atlanta, Kansas, he was the son of Raymond and Mildred E. (Brown) Groom. He was raised in the Atlanta and Winfield area and graduated from Winfield High School in 1954.
Mr. Groom proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1962 serving in the Reserves as well.
He was united in marriage to Ann M. McFarland on January 16, 1960 in Great Bend, Kansas. The couple moved to Winfield and he was employed for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita. John later was employed for the City of Winfield as a lineman and then General Electric as a mechanic. He worked for Grief Brothers and Tri County Construction also as a mechanic. In 1985 he went to work for USD #465 as a mechanic and bus driver, retiring in 1999. John later returned to work where he was employed for Rural Water District #4 in their maintenance department. He retired in August of 2013.
In addition to being a longtime mechanice, John enjoyed his animals, farming, camping and spending time with his family. Ann preceded him in death on November 19, 2013

His daughter: Laura Williamson and husband Donnie of Newkirk, OK;
His brother: James R. Groom and wife Beverly of Winfield, KS;
His sister: Janet Pankey of Kansas City, KS; and
His 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
A viewing and visitation will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The family will greet friends during that time. Graveside memorial inurnment services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Mr. Groom's name for Harden Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
