John D. Gillis, 72, of Arkansas City, Kansas, passed away Saturday afternoon, June 15, 2019 at Via Christi St. Frances in Wichita.
Born June 10, 1947, in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Harold and Mary (Lyttle) Gillis. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1965. Following school, he started his career at General Electric at Strother Field. While working at GE, he attended Cowley County Community College where he received his Associates Degree.
John was united in marriage to Anita Sparks on September 24, 1977 at the Arkansas City First Assembly of God Church. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. John continued working at GE for over 46 years, retiring as Crew Chief on the flight line in 2011. He was a devoted member of Arkansas City First Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed mowing the church lawn, landscaping, detailing and working on his vehicles, and tinkering around the house. He especially enjoyed playing with his grandkids and taking them places.
His family includes his wife Anita of Arkansas City; his children, Christy Gillis of Arkansas City; David Gillis of Arkansas City; his grandchildren, Brayden and Christian Enderud of Arkansas City; and his sisters, Helen Jordan and husband, George of Hackney; Betty Miller and husband, Larry of Bryan, TX; Ann Lawrence and husband, Terry of Oxford; Deborah Fraktman and husband, Mark of Cedar Point.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren, Clint David and Kelley James Enderud.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 21, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Arkansas City First Assembly of God Church. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the church on Thursday evening from 5 to 8. The family will greet visitors during that time. Miles Funeral Service in Winfield is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established in John's name for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
