John Joseph Beers, Jr., 83, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at his home.

Born July 20, 1943, in Winfield, he was the son of John Joseph Beers, Sr. and Dortha (Scott) Beers. He was raised and received his education in Winfield until his family moved to San Antonio, Texas. John completed high school in San Antonio. He attended the University of Texas in Austin and obtained an Associates degree. He returned to San Antonio and attended St. Mary’s University, receiving a Bachelor degree in Education. John was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 12. He struggled with many obstacles throughout his life. He had brain surgery at the age of 20 and was able to overcome many of those obstacles.

He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Medford in 1972. The couple made their home in San Antonio for 40 years. John worked as an elementary teacher. The couple retired to Winfield. Mary Ann preceded him in death on December 12, 2025.

John was a member of First United Methodist Church in Winfield. He enjoyed reading and continued taking classes to educate himself in various subjects his entire life. He especially loved his parrots, Angel and Echo.

He is survived by his brother Eric Beers and wife, Connie of Virginia Beach, VA; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Private services will be held under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Interment will take place at Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in John’s name for the SPCA. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
