Obituary

Joe Wylie Smithey, 67, of Oxford, Kansas, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 22, 2016 at his home.

Born August 12, 1948 in Commerce, Texas, he was the son of F.L. and Gwendolyn (Johnson) Smithey. He was raised and received his education in Abernathy, Texas, graduating from Abernathy High School in 1966. In July of 1966, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1968 and returned to Paris, Texas. While in Paris, he began working as a plumber, an occupation which he continued when he moved to Fort Worth, Texas and later, Bend, Oregon.

In 2002, Joe met Kathy Stiner of Oxford, Kansas. The couple made their home in Bend, Oregon and later, Eugene. He continued working as a plumber until retiring in 2011. In August of 2015, the couple moved to Oxford, to be near Kathy's family.

He enjoyed waterfalls, hiking, and especially loved his dog, Enya.

His family includes:
His companion of 14 years: Kathy Stiner of Oxford;
His daughters: Anna Smithey of Bend, OR; Amanda Harris of Redmond, OR;
His ex-wife: Carolin Smithey of Hurst, TX;
His sister: Mary Smith of Las Vegas, NV;
His brother: David Smithey of Texas; and
His two grandsons: Zane Smithey and Jayden Harris.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Smithey.

Private services will be held at a later date. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in Joe's name for the Alzheimer's Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
