JOE D. SMITH, 65, of Winfield, Kansas, went to be with Jesus peacefully Saturday evening, September 18, 2010 at Via Christi/St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita.
Born on November 21, 1944 in Wichita, Kansas, he was the son of Stephen A. and Lea (Lockhart) Smith. He was raised and received his education in South Haven and Oxford, Kansas, graduating from Oxford High School in 1963.
Joe proudly served his country in the National Guard. He was employed at Boeing Aircraft and later Gordon Piatt where he was a draftsman. He began working with KG Day Builders before starting his own business, JDS Complete Carpentry Service, which he owned for over 20 years.
He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Winfield where he was actively involved. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially attending their sporting and musical events. Joe also enjoyed family picnics, hunting, collecting knives and drawing. Throughout the last few years, Joe had made close friends with the caregivers at the Winfield Dialysis Center. .

His son: Joseph Smith and wife Rhoda and their children, Leticia, Christian and Dorian of Winfield, KS;
His daughter: Krista Russell and husband Tyson and their daughter, Sydney of Winfield, KS;
His mother: Lea Smith of Wellington, KS;
His sisters: Stephie Freeman of Lawrence, KS; and Lisa Farley of Wellington, KS; and
A host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Stephen; his brothers, Mike, Dennis and Gary; and his sister, Ivy Morgan.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Evangelical Free Church. Private inurnment will take place at a later date at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery in Winfield.
A memorial has been established in Joe's name for an educational fund for his grandchildren. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
