Obituary

JOE L. SCHOLFIELD, 84, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday evening, November 12, 2009 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Born on September 1, 1925 in Fort Scott, Kansas, he was one of seven children born to Walter and Beulah (Luman) Scholfield. He was raised on farm west of Fort Scott and attended a country grade school. He graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1943 and the family moved to Winfield.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Scholfield proudly served his country in the United States Navy and served on the battleship Alabama. Joe was involved in the battles of Guam, Saipong, Tinian, Luzon, Manila, Okinawa and Japan He witnessed the signing of the peace treaty with Japan as the Alabama was moored next to the battleship Missouri in Yobakaima Harbor. Following his honorable discharge in April of 1945 he returned to Winfield.

Joe met Irma Atkinson at the First Baptist Church in Winfield and they were united in marriage on September 29, 1946. The couple were in the hatchery business with his parents until November of 1951 when they moved to a farm in Missouri. They returned to Kansas in 1964 after purchasing a farm across from Irma's childhood home. They farmed that land for 30 years before retiring and returning to Winfield. During his retirement years, Joe created many pieces of furniture in his workshop.

His family includes:
His wife: Irma of the home;
His sons: Tony Scholfield and wife Jeanine of Idaho; and Max Scholfield and wife Jennifer of Colorado;
His brothers: Dick Scholfield and wife Virginia and Vic Scholfield and wife Bea all of Wichita, KS;
His sisters: Elsie Green of Missouri and Martha Mitchell of Georgia;
His grandchildren: William, Justin, Tyler and Jennifer; and
A host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parent he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gene and Mick Scholfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Tisdale Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M., Monday, November 16, 2009. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M., that evening.

A memorial has been established in Joe's name for the Cumbernauld Employee Appreciation Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
