Obituary

Joan A. Drake, 90, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 7, 2024, at Cumbernauld Village.

Born June 13, 1934, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Roy G. and Edna (Meyers) David.  She was raised and received her education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School.  She then attended Kansas State University in Manhattan.

She was united in marriage to Don W. Drake on June 3, 1955, at First United Methodist Church in Winfield.  After three years of Don serving in the United States Air Force, the couple returned to the Drake family ranch in Winfield where they raised children, Debra (Debbie), David, and Scott.  Joan will be remembered as a dedicated farm wife, loving mother and for the beautiful home she made.  Don preceded her in death on March 26, 2013.

Joan leaves behind a legacy of deep love and devotion to her family.  She gave tirelessly of herself, caring for her husband, children, and grandchildren.  She will be remembered as an optimistic spirit who always saw the good, never bad.  She built a home that was warm and welcoming, bustling with activity around holidays and never without arts and crafts and special treats for grandchildren.  She is also remembered for her faith in God and His divine plan.  She was never short of a good hymn, which she played on her piano at home and also sang in the church choir for many years.

Her passions were her family, her faith, and church, the agriculture industry, hosting special holidays, and helping others.  She also enjoyed cooking, collecting antiques, gardening, working in her yard and "pasture daisies".  She loved traveling, family vacations, taking pictures, and spending time with friends and loved ones.  She also enjoyed reading and studying her Bible, jotting down notes about her thoughts each day.

Joan was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at KSU.  She was involved in Grandview United Methodist Church for many years, serving as a Sunday school teacher and choir member, member of United Methodist Women, and holding several offices.  She was a member of the Cowley County Cattle Women's Association, was an active leader in the Floral 4-H Club, and participated in PEO for more than 50 years.  She also served on the board of directors for Winfield Recreation Commission.

Her family includes her sons, David Drake and wife, Krista, of Derby; Scott Drake and wife, Shana, of Winfield;  her son-in-law, Milford Schulhof, of Centennial, CO; her grandchildren, Todd Drake and wife, Allyson, of Urbandale, IA;  Ty Drake and wife, Celia, of Houston, TX;  Taylor Arnold and husband, Keaton, of Houston, TX;  Meg Stopps and husband, Nathan, of Charlottesville, VA;  Madilyn Self and husband, Cody, of Ovilla, TX;   Logan Drake and wife, Natalie, of Rose Hill;  Lindsey Towers and husband, Michael, of Denver, CO;  Erin Schulhof of Denver, CO; her seven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Lynn Drake Schulhof, and her siblings, Walter David, Elizabeth Linville, Glen David, and Barbara Montague.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, October 25, 2024, at Grandview United Methodist Church under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.  Private family interment has taken place at Wilmot Cemetery.
