Joan Williams Cornett, 88, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away on May 6, 2016 at Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City, Kansas.
Joan was born February 16, 1928 in Elgin, Kansas to Kale Alonzo and Hazel Leone (Parks) Williams. She was raised and educated in Cedar Vale, Kansas, later attending Oklahoma A&M (OSU) majoring in Mathematics. She married Carl Cornett who she later divorced.
Joan worked for her father's Chevrolet Dealership as a young girl. As an adult she worked at Boeing, Binney & Smith and the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. She retired in 1994 as the Reimbursement Officer at WSH&TC after 28 years of service. After her retirement she was a guardian for several former patients at WSH&TC.
Joan served on numerous committees and organizations She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield and served on the Helping Hands Committee. She served on the Red Cross board in Winfield and was chairman for several years. She was a Girl Scout leader for her daughter's scout troop. She was actively involved with the Special Olympics Softball Tournament and helped Chuck Watson run the concession stand. She served on the CCDS board with Bill Brooks for many years.
Joan was very active in her children's activities and school. She never missed a band concert, conference or softball tournament. She spent many hours driving her children to softball tournaments all over Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Education was very important to Joan. She was proud that all her children received a college education.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Kale and Hazel Williams, a daughter, Teresa Pat Cornett, a sister, Patricia Ann Williams McGlasson, a brother, Kale Williams, Jr., brother-in-law, Ross McGinnis, sister-in-law, Jeannie Taylor Williams and nephews, Mike Williams and Andrew McGinnis.
Joan is survived by:
Her daughters: Carla Johnson and husband, Carl of Winfield; Julie Cornett of Lincoln, AR; Kim Brotton and husband, Bryan of Haysville;
Her grandchildren: Adrian Kale Johnson of Grand Junction, CO; Ali Loftin and husband, Kyle of New Orleans, LA; Austin Kale Brotton of Haysville;
Her great grandson: Kale Patrick Loftin of New Orleans, LA;
Her brothers: Bill Williams of Hutchinson; Richard Williams and wife, Patricia of Alvin, TX;
Her sisters: Barbara McGinnis of Dothan, AL; Nancy Richards and husband, Jeff of Wichita; and
Many nephews, great nephews, nieces, great nieces and cousins.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:30. The family will greet visitors during this time.
Memorials have been established in Joan's name for the Cowley County Humane Society and the Kansas Special Olympics. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
