JO ANN HAFENSTEIN, 71, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Tuesday morning, June 16, 2009 at St. Francis/Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita.
Born on December 24, 1937 in Burden, Kansas, she was the daughter of William Lee and Alma Sadie (Neill) Tatum. She was raised and received her education in Burden and graduated from Burden High School in 1955. She later attended Emporia State Teachers College where she studied music and education.
She was united in marriage on June 10, 1956 to Marvin Hafenstein in Burden. Marvin's career took the couple to several locations including Eskridge, KS; Belleville, Ill; Topeka, Ks; Cheyenne, Wy; San Diego, Ca; Joplin, Mo; Bentonville, Ark; and Mississippi. JoAnn graduated from Southwest Missouri State College in 1969 with a degree in business education. She taught at Gravette, Hattisburg, Laural and Burden High Schools.
The couple returned to Burden in 1991. JoAnn was more than a teacher. She and Marvin both believed that people exceeded through education. JoAnn was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church where she was actively involved. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. JoAnn was an accomplished pianist and loved music, whether playing or listening to it.

Her daughter: Susan Hafenstein and husband David Olsen of Lafayette, IN;
Her brother: Robert Tatum of Burden, KS;
Her grandchildren: Brianna, Nathan, Daniel, Kellen, Amber, Ashley and Alexis; and
Her great-grandchildren: Olivia, Christopher and Alex; and
other extended family members including nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Tatum.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, June 20, 2009 at the Burden United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Grand Prairie Cemetery, northeast of Burden. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M., Friday, June 19, 2009. The family will greet friends during this time.
A memorial has been established in JoAnn's name for the American Academy of Neurology Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
