Jimmy "Jim" Thomas, 64, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Saturday morning, April 30, 2022, at his home.
Born August 25, 1957, in Winfield, he was the son of Lewis and Norma K. (Parscal) Thomas. He was raised in New Salem and attended Winfield schools. After high school, Jim began his career as a heavy equipment operator at Shore Construction in Burden, and later Trico out of Oxford.
He was united in marriage to Ronda Rhodd on May 7, 1982, in Miami, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in New Salem. On March 26, 1980, Jim went to work as an Oil Distributor Operator for Cowley County Road and Bridge District 1. He held many positions with the county and on April 1, 2000, was promoted to Foreman. He remained at the county for over 32 years, retiring as Foreman on June 25, 2012. Jim also worked for Salem Township beginning in January 2005. He ran the road grater, was sexton for the township cemeteries, and served as a trustee. He retired from the township on April 4, 2022, due to health concerns.
He enjoyed going to Bluegrass with his family, cooking for family gatherings, and riding his Harley. He also enjoyed camping and fishing with his grandkids, antiquing, coon hunting, dove hunting with his "sons" Matt and Josh, and taking road trips with Ronda.
His family includes his wife Ronda of New Salem; his daughter Monica Kelley and husband, Tyson of Winfield; his son Matthew Thomas and girlfriend, Brandi Scarth of Winfield; his grandchildren, Lauren and Liam Kelley; his siblings Norma Jean Barkus and husband, Don of Tyro; Steve Thomas and wife, Darla of Arkansas City; Joy Vaughters and husband, Kevin of Altamont; and a host of nieces, nephews, and Bluegrass family.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Robert Rhodd, and his four-legged best friend Zena.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, May 6, 2022, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at New Salem Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled on Thursday from 5 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.
Memorials have been established in Jim's name for his grandchildren's education and for Kindred Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
