Jessie Nelle
(Morgan) Hatfield
April 8, 1930 – September 30, 2024
Jessie Nelle (Morgan) Hatfield, 94, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday, September 30, 2024 at Cumbernauld Village.
Jessie was born on April 8, 1930 to Thelma and Cecil Morgan in Udall, Kansas along with her older sister, Gaila, and younger sister, Beth.
Jessie was married to Jesse William Hatfield of Belle Plaine, Kansas for 75 years. They were married on January 23, 1949, but not before Jessie had finished a semester at Southwestern College as insisted upon by her mother, Thelma. Jesse passed away 118 days before Jessie.
Jessie is the loving mother of six and their spouses: Penny (and John) Blair of Black Diamond, WA, Bill (and JoLetta) Hatfield of Issaquah, WA, Rex (and Shawn) Hatfield of Covington, WA, Jeff (and Jana) of Belle Plaine, KS, Joe (and Jennifer) Hatfield of Seattle, WA, and Teague (and Tami) Hatfield of Bend, OR.
Married life for Jessie and Jesse began in Belle Plaine before moving to, in order, San Diego (during Jesse's service in the Navy); back to Belle Plaine; Lawrence, KS; Redding, CA; Kent, WA; Cedar Rapids, IA and back to Kent before moving to Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, Kansas in January of 2015.
Always on the go, Jessie and Jesse moved many times early in their marriage and as those moves slowed they kept on the go with travel. Trips to Kansas, Kauai, cruises, camping trips, church retreats, and many other adventures kept them active. Jessie loved it all.
Jessie's work life included driving a truck of ice for her dad's business, teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, delivering for a florist in San Diego, child care in her home, working as a clerk in a grocery store, and many years at Stewart Drug for dear friends, Bill and Lois Stewart. Even in retirement, she continued working (between travels) at Gateway True Value Hardware with her son-in-law in Enumclaw. She also delivered many newspapers helping on her children's paper routes. It's hard to imagine where she found the time since she had at least one child under 18 from when she was 22 until she was 59.
Jessie was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, a volunteer for Kilauaea Lighthouse for 20 years with Jesse, and a member of the Kent Washington PEO. Jessie enjoyed hosting family meals and holidays and attending events at church and her children's schools. She was always engaged with family, friends, co-workers and organizations she was part of.
Jessie enjoyed her children's activities and attended as many games, plays, and events as possible. She always had one more thing to take care of. As her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, she cherished each one.
Those who knew her will attest that Jessie was the sweetest of humans. She brought kindness everywhere and doled it out freely. But she was also steady, tough, and lived daily with the no-nonsense mentality she was raised with.
Jessie is survived by her sister, Beth Morgan Evans, her six children, and grandchildren: JB, Shona, Amanda, Jesse, Joel, Angela, Morgan, Jeremy, Jessica, Adam, Ryan, Lindsay, Teague, Carson, Sam, and Hannah. She also has twenty-three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas. Interment will follow at Belle Plaine Cemetery.
Memorials have been established in Jessie's name for Cumbernauld Village Employee Appreciation Fund and for the Legacy Community Regional Foundation for the benefit of the Udall Public Library. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
