Jerry Lee Wilcoxen, 84, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, May 5, 2017 at his home.
Born March 26, 1933 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Ora and Jeanette (Newton) Wilcoxen. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1951. After high school he attended St. John's College for a year before joining the United States Army. While in the Army, Jerry was stationed in Panama. In 1954 he received his honorable discharge from the Army and returned to Winfield. He then attended Southwestern College.
Jerry married Glayda D. Toothaker in 1955. They made their home in Winfield and had four children, Teresa, Roger, Jack and Tom. The couple later divorced. Jerry worked for several area businesses as a young man including, Jack Lane Cheverolet, Dean Drennan Auto, Maytag and Ray Potter Furniture. In 1958 he began his career as a Mail Carrier for the United States Postal Service. During this time, he also ran Wilcoxen Greenhouse south of Winfield.
Jerry was united in marriage to Phyllis (Falkingham) Parsons on December 17, 1983 in Medford, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Winfield. Jerry continued working for the Post Office for over 30 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #10, VFW Post #3544, and the Winfield Masonic Lodge #110. He served as Commander of the VFW as well as playing the bugle at many funeral services. He was also a 4H leader and an avid bowler. He enjoyed woodworking and especially enjoyed using his woodworking skills to make projects for his grandchildren and other family members.

His grandchildren: Molly Armijo and husband, Harold of Colorado Springs, CO; Kerby Harms of Houston, TX; Angeline Frisch and husband, Frank of Blackhawk, CO; Mary Lee and husband, Casey of Bellevue, NE; Thomas Harms and wife, Lauren of Roeland Park, KS; Samantha Myatt of Oxford; Robyn Myatt of Oxford; Briana Wilcoxen of Winfield;
His great grandchildren: Brayden and Milly Straughn; Clara Frisch; Brilee Stone; Isaac Armijo, Micah, Jonah, Noah and Susannah Lee; and
11 step grandchildren and 12 step-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by a son, Jack R. Wilcoxen and two great grandchildren, Joel and Henry Armijo and a step grandson, Christopher Waits.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, May 12, 2017 at Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment with Military and Masonic Committal Honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4 to 8. The family will greet visitors during this time.
A memorial has been established in Jerry's name for Grace United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
