Obituary

Jerol M. Mulcahy, 69, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday afternoon, January 4, 2013 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.

Born September 17, 1943 in Winfield, Kansas he was the son of William Martin and Mildred A. "Billie" (Moore) Mulcahy. His father died when Jerol was 13 years old. The family had just moved to a small farm north west of Winfield. His mother worked in town and managed to keep the children on the farm. The family had several animals including: a milking cow; chickens for eggs; and a horse for the children to ride. They also had a large garden, and Jerol did much of the garden work. Jerol and his younger sister, Nancy, attended rural elementary school west of Winfield. He then attended Winfield High School where he excelled in Industrial Arts Classes. After graduating in 1961 he remained on the family farm and continued to work in the garden, on the lawn, and in his woodworking and metal shops. Many of his friends and relatives have wind chimes and plant shelves that he crafted.

Jerol was born into a large family with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He always enjoyed family gatherings, many of which were held in their home. After the death of his mother in 1990, Jerol moved to Winfield. He had his own apartment when he started receiving services from SouthWind ResCare in 1997. Jerol was able to own his own home where he had a small wood shop. He enjoyed spending his evenings at the gas station on south main, hanging out and swapping stories with "the guys". He was limited by many physical problems that prevented him from working a regular job, but he enjoyed a quiet life and enjoyed keeping up with family and friends.

Jerol was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Dorothy Jean and Nancy Carol, and a brother, Larry Lukenbill. He is survived by several cousins, including, Marge Lampson and Shirley Sweet-Bohm of Grenola. He is also survived by his present and former caretakers, Kelly Nunguesser and Billie Young, as well as many other dear friends, neighbors, and friends at SouthWind ResCare.

A Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Winfield. The Rosary will be recited on Wednesday January 9, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. at the church. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in Jerol's name for SouthWind ResCare. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
