Obituary

Jenny Marian Powell, 94, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday evening, September 25, 2024, at Winfield Senior Living surrounded by family members.

Born January 29, 1930, in her family home near Braman, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Bertie "B.D." and Mabel Vera (Henry) Finley. Growing up, Jenny lived in many areas of Kansas, moving frequently to follow her father's job in the oil fields. When she was in third grade, the family settled in Winfield on what is now Country Club Road. She would reminisce about her and her siblings rushing home from Bryant School in order to be home before the five o'clock whistle blew at the Winfield Power Plant. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1948.

Jenny met the man who would eventually become her husband when he was riding horseback on his family's farm, which shared a border with her father's orchard. She wed Julius "Gene" Powell on April 4, 1948, in Winfield, where the couple made their home. Jenny managed Canterbury Village and Canterbury Heights Apartments for 35 years, before retiring in 2007. Together, she and Gene spent many years mentoring and caring for adolescents in foster care. Gene preceded her in death on March 25, 2005.

Jenny spent much of her life as an active volunteer, donating her time to the Four Winds Girl Scout Council, Grace United Methodist Church, William Newton Memorial Hospital, and Meals on Wheels. She was an avid KU sports fan and enjoyed gardening and reading. Her family has many fond memories of spending summers with Jenny and Gene at their cabin on Grand Lake in Oklahoma. Jenny had an adventurous spirit and spent many hours driving her grandchildren in the boat, waterskiing, and walking through the woods.

Her family includes daughters Cheryl Ann (Powell) Bolack and husband, Richard of Burden; Rebecca Jo (Powell) Baxter and husband, John of South Bend, IN; and her son Gary Gene Powell and wife, Ginger of Jefferson, GA; and her grandchildren, Michell Bolack of Kansas City; Matthew (Lauren) Bolack of Sachse, TX; Patrick Powell, Chandler Powell, and Chase Powell all of Jefferson, GA; Sarah (Ryan Willis) Thomas of Conifer, CO; Rachel Murphy of Wichita; Melody Maxson of South Bend, IN; Leah (Brad) Throneberry of Kokomo, IN; and her great grandchildren, Jadon Bolack, Conner Bolack, Brynn Murphy, Jackson Murphy, Ella Murphy, and Logan Throneberry and Daisy Throneberry.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jenny was preceded in death by an infant daughter, brothers, Virgil, Jack, and Albert Finley, and her sister Dora (Finley) Burris.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, September 30, 2024, at Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 3 to 5 P.M. on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. The family will greet visitors during this time.
