Jean Marilyn
Hein
March 20, 1932 – October 23, 2022
Jean Marilyn Hein, 90, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022, at Chisholm Place in Wichita.
Jean was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of John Kenneth and Agnes Mary (Ayers) Muse. She was three and a half years old when the family moved to the family farm near McPherson, Kansas. Many events of farm life filled her memory of her early years. She attended Centennial School, a one room country grade school for elementary years and has memories of "Fox and Geese", "Work Up" ballgames and other rural school activities. She began her high school years in McPherson and then graduated from Marion High School in 1949.
Jean attended Kansas State University and was active in Kappa Phi, a Methodist group, while attending KSU, and then attended the Wichita Business College. She married Allen Jay Hein in 1950 at the First Methodist Church of Marion, Kansas, now known as Valley United Methodist Church. When they lived in Columbia, South Carolina, where Allen was in the United States Army, Jean was the secretary to the president of the Life Insurance Company of South Carolina. Jean and Allen purchased the Western Auto Associate Store in Winfield, Kansas in February 1957. Even though working full-time, she was an active member of the Whittier School PTA for several years, taught 5th and 6th grade Sunday School at First United Methodist Church for 20 years, and was an adult leader with Girl Scouts and the City Farmer's 4-H Club. She was an active member of Soroptimist International, was nominated as Outstanding Woman in 1975, and was President from 1990-1991. She was chairman of the church's Council of Ministries, a member of the pastor-parish relations committee, church finance committee member, and on the administrative board of the church. She participated in the Anna Ruth Circle of First United Methodist Church, was a member of Hypatia Study Club and Eve Club. Jean served as a board member of the United Way for five years, four of which as secretary. She was instrumental in starting the women's auxiliary of the United Way. The Western Auto store was sold February 4, 1989, after 32 years in business.
Retirement was enjoyed with Allen by traveling in their motorhome, visiting all 50 states, most Canadian Provinces, and some European travel. Allen preceded her in death on January 6, 2012. Jean moved to Cumbernauld Village in 2012. On June 2, 2022, she moved to Chisholm Place in Wichita.
