Janet Jolene
Spoon
April 10, 1955 – December 25, 2023
Janet Jolene (Smith) Spoon, 68, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away December 25, 2023, in Winfield.
Janet was born April 10, 1955, in Salina, Kansas. She was the daughter of George and JoAnn (Pearson) Smith. Janet grew up in Salina, KS; Ness City, KS; Oberlin, KS; Hays, KS; Winfield, KS; and Oxford, KS. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1973. In 1983, Janet married Gene Spoon. Janet and Gene made their home in Winfield with daughters Gina and Christy.
Janet loved her family and was deeply loved in return by her husband, her daughters and grandchildren, her sisters and brothers, her nieces and nephews, and her friends. She loved sharing pictures of her daughters and their families and loved visiting them when possible.
She worked alongside her husband Gene in his business as well as in hospital settings, as a secretary, and in retail throughout her adult life. Janet was a very hard worker who was patient and kind to her coworkers who remember her fondly.
Some of Janet's favorite things to do were to spend time with Gene, to read nonfiction novels, and to garden. She was a fabulous gardener and loved spending time there. Throughout her life, she also enjoyed her parrots, dogs, and her cat.
Janet was much loved by her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. They fondly recall that she never forgot a birthday or special day, and cards from Janet always included a feather. She loved playing and spending time with the children in her family and of her friends. A special memory is of a summer spent doing a weekly "weird science experiment" with Aunt Janet.
She had a big heart and a willingness to help anyone in need. If a friend or family member called Janet, she was willing to drop everything and do whatever she could to help. She had many long-time friendships she treasured.
Preceding Janet in death were her parents George and JoAnn Smith, her parents-in-law Roy and Ruth Barger, her brother Grant P. Smith, and her sister Jody Enns.
Janet is survived by her husband Gene; their daughters and their husbands, Gina and Dave Heller of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Christy and Paul Rozo of Newport Beach, CA; her grandchildren, Amber Brayton, Jarad Farber, Gabrielle Hazel, Jackson Heller, Bianca Gaxiola, and Andrew Rozo; and her great-grandchildren, Lucas, Rylan, Macie, Bella, and Roxey Brayton; Charlie and Lucy Farber; and Gavin, Gianna, and Genevieve Gaxiola; her siblings, George Smith and his wife Suzanne of Burlington; Michael Smith and his wife, Elgena of Clay Center; Tracy Smith and his wife, Anita of Oxford; Scott Smith of Sheridan, WY; Julie Graham and her husband, Eric of Winfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
