Obituary

Janet Louise Evans, 85, of Augusta, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, May 28, 2026, at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover.

Born March 12, 1941, in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Alford and Fern (Files) Burdett. She was raised and received her education in Cedar Vale, where she attended Cedar Vale High School.

She was united in marriage to Richard L. Evans on March 15, 1959, in Wauneta, Kansas. The couple made their first home in Cedar Vale and spent brief times in Colorado and New Mexico. They spent most of their lives in Wellington where Janet began her career as a nurses aide at Cedar View Nursing Home. She later began a career of over 20 years at St. Luke’s Hospital in Wellington before retiring in 2000. After retirement, the couple moved to Elgin, Kansas, and Janet served as Mayor for a brief time. Richard preceded her in death on September 1, 2006.

She was a member of Sedan United Methodist Church receiving the Methodist Woman of the Year award. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting, reading, and watching hummingbirds and butterflies.

Her family includes her sons, Richard A. Evans and wife, DeEtta of Sedan; Dean Evans and wife, Viola of Augusta; James Evans and wife, Virginia of Caney; her sister Nedra Burdett of Sedan; and her 13 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Richard.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Pleasant Valley Cemetery south of Grenola, Kansas, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

A memorial has been established in Janet’s name for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
