Jane Lynn Gary Duncan, 93, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at William Newton Hospital.
Born July 10, 1924, Jane was the daughter of George G. Gary and Frances Emma (Lynn) Gary. She was a lifelong citizen of Winfield whose family were early pioneers. Her maternal grandfather, J.B. Lynn, came to Winfield in 1874, establishing Lynn Mercantile at the corner of Eighth and Main, the building of which remains in use today. Her paternal grandfather, Simon G. Gary, served in Company H, Third Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. As part of Grants Army, he fought in many battles, including Shilo and the siege of Vicksburg, and was wounded four times. In 1877, he came to Winfield on horseback, sent for his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hunt, and their three children, and became a furniture maker. In 1883, he was appointed Sheriff of Cowley County. Jane's father, George Gary, was a principal at the First National Bank. Her mother, Frances, died when she was only eleven. George raised her with the help of Clara Mueller, who effectively became her surrogate mother.
In 1941, she fell for the star center of the Southwestern College football team, Bob Duncan, whom she soon called "Dunc". He enlisted in the Navy in May, 1942 and became a dive bomber pilot flying off the USS Lexington during the climatic battles in the South Pacific in 1944 that destroyed the Japanese Navy. On December 25, 1944, Jane and Dunc were married at her father's home on the corner of Ninth and Maris. When Dunc completed his service in 1947, they moved to Winfield and, in 1950, built their house on Simon Gary's homestead, which he had purchased in 1883. There, they lived the rest of their lives, raising Dana, Gary and Craig and participating in the life of the community. After Dunc died in 2007, Jane was able to continue on with the love and everyday assistance of Craig, his wife, Diana and Dana. She loved her six grandkids and ten great-grandkids and they loved her. Jane was one of the last of Winfield's "old-timers" and she will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. She was 93.
Mrs. Duncan was eclectic in her tastes, home, clothes and friends from every walk of life.
Her entertainment ranged from the classical to slapstick. But above all she dearly loved her "Dunc", children, relatives, close friends and her community.
She served 35 years on the William Newton Memorial Hospital board and became a dedicated advocate to provide a superior facility for all patients and hospital personnel.
Jane is survived by her daughter, Dana, sons, Gary and Craig, six grandchildren, Rebecah James, Dr. Spencer Duncan, Taylor Duncan, David Duncan, Daisy Duncan, Michael Duncan and ten great-grandchildren.
Jane requested in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to William Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
A come and go memorial will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 2 to 4 P.M. at the American Legion. All who were touched by her over the years are invited.
