Obituary

James Melvin Madison, 92, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday evening, March 25, 2016 in Comfort Care at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Born October 11, 1923 in Springfield, Missouri, he was the son of James Aaron and Willa B. (Shaffer) Madison. He was raised and received his education in Oxford, Kansas. He moved to Wichita in 1941 and then on March 17, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Private First Class during WWII. During this time he received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star, World War II Victory Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Silver Star. He was honorably discharged on December 23, 1945. In February 1946, James returned to Winfield.

He worked in construction until 1966. He also worked as a Charter Bus Driver and traveled to every state in the US except Hawaii. He drove over one million miles and retired from the Winfield Bus Company in 1985.

James was a member of Central Baptist Church in Winfield. He enjoyed cabinetry work, carving chains from wood sticks and sawed derby cars for children. He also served as a deacon in the church and was a church bus driver.

His family includes:
Numerous nieces and nephews; and
Great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles W., Harold A., and Loren "Wesley", and his sisters, Wilma Bynum and Betty Cole.

Visitation will be held at Central Baptist Church beginning at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, March 31, 2016. Services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Thursday, March 31, 2016. Interment and Military Committal Honors will follow at the Oxford Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in James' name for Central Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
