Obituary

James Joseph "Joe" Spiser, Jr., 68, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, September 9, 2022, at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover.

Born December 9, 1953, in Wichita, Kansas, he was the son of James Joseph, Sr. and Louisa (Cross) Spiser. He was raised and received his education in Arkansas City, Kansas graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1971. While growing up he spent many summers with his grandparents in Grove, Oklahoma. Following high school, Joe joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1979. He then enlisted in the United States Army Reserve where he remained until retiring as a Captain in 1997.

He was united in marriage to Suzan Gail Guinty on August 14, 1976, in Arkansas City. Joe returned to school in 1979, attending Cowley County Community College where he received an Associate of Arts degree in Business. He then attended Southwestern College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 1983. Following school, Joe began his career in banking as a National Bank Examiner for the Comptroller of Currency. He then worked as a Risk Manager for Home National Bank and Trust and American State Bank. He continued his career as an Internal Auditor for Equity Bancshares. Suzan preceded him in death on February 15, 2014.

In 2015, Joe began working as the Internal Security Officer for Kaw Valley Bank in Topeka, where he remained until retiring from banking in 2018. He then began working as the Controller for Two Rivers Coop in Arkansas City from 2018 until 2020. Joe was married to Joni Curl on October 9, 2021, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Arkansas City and Wichita. Joe enjoyed collecting antique instruments, clocks, fans, and guns. He also enjoyed reading, watching YouTube, and helping others.

His family includes his wife Joni of Wichita; his children, Valerie Albin and husband, Joshua of Andover; Nicholas Spiser of Wichita; Paige Plihal and husband, Cody of San Diego, CA; Hali Stevenson and husband, Taylor of El Dorado; Piper Utt and husband, Brad of Derby; Chloé Curl of Stillwater, OK; his mother Louisa Spiser of Ponca City, OK; his brothers, Tom Spiser and wife, Shelley of Ponca City, OK; Darren Spiser of Winfield; and his grandchildren, Maddox, Allison, and Myles Albin; Madeleine, Colin, and Liam Plihal; Riley and Jack Stevenson; Heidi Pickering; Witten Utt; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his father and first wife, Suzan.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, September 16, 2022, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment and Military Committal Honors will be held at 2:00 P.M., at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield.

A memorial has been established in Joe's name for the Kansas Honor Flight. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
