Obituary

Iva May (Weeks) Whiteman passed away February 11, 2014 in Wichita, Kansas, ten days short of her 88th birthday.

She was born at home in rural Russell County, Kansas on February 21, 1926, the youngest of nine children of George and Ruth (Meharg) Weeks. She attended Shannon Grade School, which was a half-mile north of her home. She attended high school at Northbranch Friends Academy, Burr Oak, Kansas, where her sister Nina was one of her teachers. After Northbranch closed she went to Haviland Friends Academy in Haviland, Kansas where she graduated in 1943. She then attended Friends Bible College, Haviland, Kansas, which at that time was a Junior College program, and graduated in 1945. That Fall she began attending Friends University in Wichita where she attended for a semester before dropping out to get married.

Iva May married Raymond Whiteman March 1, 1946 at Shannon Friends Church which was on Weeks land a couple miles north of their home. They lived on the farm east of Atlanta after being married. They were married for 46 years when Raymond passed away March 26, 1992. Iva May was a stay at home farm wife and mother for most of her life. She and Raymond left the farm and moved to Atlanta in November 1976 to care for Raymond's dad, Albert. She continued to live there until her death.

She has been actively involved in Timber Creek Friends Church serving as Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, Education Committee Chairperson, and a member of the Women's Missionary Society. At the time of her death she was the church treasurer and Presiding Clerk. Iva May enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, gardening, and bird watching. She enjoyed spending time with her family and prayed for them daily.

After Raymond's death, she served as a "Foster Grandparent" for 14 ½ years at Central of Burden Elementary School where she was known as "Grandma". She was forced to quit as "Foster Grandmother", which she enjoyed greatly, when she had to undergo cancer treatments in 2007. Kids that she "Grand-mothered" still call her "Grandma".

She is survived by son Lyle [Peggy] Whiteman of Gate, OK; Daryl [Trish] Whiteman of Atlanta, KS; Cora [Marty] Condon of Mulvane, KS; and Ralph [Teresa] Whiteman of Derby, KS. She is survived by 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband Raymond, daughter Shirley Lanier,
her parents and eight brothers and sisters and their spouses.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 14, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Timber Creek Friends Church in Atlanta. Interment will follow at Timber Creek Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors during this time.
