Obituary

Irma "Irene" Summers Hix, 85, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, January 26, 2016 at the South Central Kansas Medical Center in Arkansas City.

Born February 25, 1930 on the family farm east of Rock, Kansas, she was the daughter of Austin Burr and Verna D. (Falkingham) Counts. She was raised and received her education in Rock at the Green Valley School until the family moved to the farm northwest of New Salem. Irene finished grade school in New Salem and then attended Winfield High School.

Irene lived most her life as a homemaker. She worked as a waitress, at Binney & Smith Crayola Factory, Beechcraft, Gambles and in child care.

Irene was united in marriage to Allen "Keith" Summers on June 22, 1956 in Winfield, Kansas. The couple made their home in Winfield and Wichita and had two children. Mr. Summers preceded her in death on February 29, 1972. She moved to Lewiston, Idaho in 1973. She married Ernest D. Hix on June 29, 1981 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He preceded her in death in February of 1984. Irene then returned to Wichita.

She was a member of the South West Baptist Church and Eagle's Lodge in Wichita, Kansas. She loved gardening, canning, crocheting, fishing and her flowers.

Her family includes:
Her sons: Dean O. Summers and wife, Lisa of Chongqing, China; Charles K. "Chuck" Summers and wife, Marie of Clarksville, MD;
Her brother: Howard Lee Counts of Akron, OH;
Her sister-in-law: Yai Counts of Gurnee, IL;
Her grandchildren: David, Carl, Ty, Jonathan, Zachariah and Benjamin Summers;
Her step grandchildren: Cheyenne and Michael; and
Numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, and husbands, Irene was preceded in death by her brothers, John, Earl and Paul, her sisters, Elsie Whaley, Vera Tanner, in-laws, Howard Whaley, Charles Tanner, Marie Counts and Barbara Counts.

Private family services will be held at Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in Irene's name for the Salvation Army. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
