Irene N.
Stiner
November 23, 1921 – October 7, 2022
Long-time Cowley County resident and local farming community member, Irene N. Stiner (nee Cole), 100, departed this life to be with her Lord on October 7, 2022, at Cumbernauld Village.
The elder of identical twins, Irene was born in Waneta, Kansas (near Cedar Vale, Kansas) on November 23, 1921, to Virginia and Marion Cole. When she was three months old, her family moved to a 440-acre farm twelve miles south of Dexter, Kansas. She attended Cowley County public schools, graduating from Dexter High School in 1939.
After high school, Irene met her future husband, Paul Stiner. They were married in March of 1942 in Hutchinson, Kansas on Friday the 13th. The "unlucky" date didn't matter. They were married for 53 years.
Into their union were born five children: Judi (1943), Janice (1947), Kenneth (1949), Keith (1952), and Jeanette (1958). The family moved to a farm six miles north of Winfield in 1958, just before Jeanette was born. Paul preceded Irene in death on July 30, 1995.
Irene is survived by her children: Judi Hughes (Glenn) of Wichita, Kansas; Janice Cartwright (Jim) of Collinsville, Oklahoma; Kenneth Stiner (Karen) of Newton, Kansas; Keith Stiner (Paula) of Winfield; and Jeanette Alexander (Luther) of Annapolis, Maryland. Her grandchildren include: Sherri Hughes Moore, Aaron Hughes, Niesa Cartwright Jacobs, Kasha Stiner, Kyle Stiner, Daniel Stiner, Mackenzie Alexander Sadia, Lauren Alexander Binns; 19 great-grandchildren and eight great great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Irene was preceded in death by her sister, Ione Cole Padgett, and a great-granddaughter, Abigail "Abby" Stiner.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, October 14, in the Central Baptist Church, 904 Wheat St., Winfield, where Irene was a long-time member. Interment follows the funeral service in Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield, on Thursday, October 13, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. The family will greet visitors beginning at 6:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established in Irene's name for Central Baptist Church and for Samaritan's Purse. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
