Iola Isophene
Pettigrew

Iola Isophene Pettigrew, 95, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, January 14, 2019 at Cumbernauld Village.
Born December 8, 1923 in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Clyde Marion and Etta Isophene (Hindman) Gordon. Her mother passed when she was very young, and she was raised by her father and his wife, Dollee on the Jarvis Ranch west of Cedar Vale, Kansas and received her education in Cedar Vale, graduating from Cedar Vale High School in 1941. After high school, she attended Pittsburg State University. Following school, she taught at several small one room school houses, including Prairie View in Dexter, Kansas, where she met Harold James Pettigrew.
She was united in marriage to Harold on September 7, 1947 at the Cedar Vale Baptist Church. The couple made their home on the Pettigrew Farm in rural Dexter, where Iola was a homemaker, raising the family's children. Mr. Pettigrew preceded her in death on June 19, 1975. Iola then went to work at nursing homes in Cedar Vale and later Dexter.
She was a member of Hicks Chapel United Methodist Church. She enjoyed painting, drawing, cooking, sewing, and playing Trivial Pursuit. She especially enjoyed the tradition of hosting Christmas Eve for her family.
Her family includes her children, Nikki Slaven and husband, Ron of Arkansas City; James Pettigrew and wife, Donita of Dexter; Stephen Pettigrew and wife, Debbie of Dexter; Lynn Norris and husband, Randy of Dexter; Dawn Powell and husband, Steve of Udall; her brother Bill Gordon of Owasso, OK; her sister, Carolyn Gordon of New York, NY; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Iola was preceded in death by a son, Johnnie Ray Pettigrew, a granddaughter, Jennifer Norris, a grandson, Brandon Powell, two brothers, Robert Gordon and Francis Gordon, and two sisters, Gladys Kerr and Marian Langius.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 21, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at Hicks Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Cedar Vale Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Sunday, January 20, 2019 from 2 to 6 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 2 to 4 that afternoon.
A memorial has been established in Iola's name for the Ronald McDonald House in Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
