Howard Lumbert, 81, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Friday morning, December 30, 2022, at his home.
Born November 17, 1941, in Winfield, he was the son of Vernon Fred and Alice Nadine (Archer) Lumbert. He was raised and received his education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1959. He later went on to receive several certificates of training through ITT Tech and scored at the top of his class in the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society classes. Howard worked for Gordon & Piatt when he married Donna Barnhardt in 1962, together they had three children and later divorced. Howard helped build the missile base at Tisdale, then moved to Burden where he worked alongside his brother Max at Parish Chevrolet in the early 1960's. He left the dealership to work at Winfield Electric Company before joining Binney & Smith as Maintenance Supervisor in 1970.
Howard was united in marriage to Linda on July 17, 1982 at Hackney Baptist Church. In 1985, he started Lumbert's Refrigeration Service. He would operate it for several years before being asked to return to his previous position at Binney & Smith. Upon Binney & Smith closing in 1997, he resumed Lumbert's Refrigeration and continued operating it until 2005. He then went to work for a short time as a regional maintenance man for Braum's Ice Cream and Dairy Stores until his retirement.
He was a member of New Hope Fellowship Church, a church he helped build. He was the founding president of the Kansas & Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Association and was also a member of the Wichita Model A Club and the Wichita Horseless Carriage Club. Howard could fix anything and earned a Doctor of Motors certificate. He enjoyed riding, restoring, and collecting British motorcycles, collecting bells, antique radios, cars, antique tractors, and camping at the Walnut Valley Festival with family and friends. He loved to travel, a highlight being a trip to England to visit the National Motorcycle Museum of Birmingham.
His family includes his wife Linda Lumbert of Winfield; his sons, Ross Lumbert and wife, Jana of Rose Hill; Morse Neighbors and partner, Donna McClain of Winfield; his daughters, Gayle Walker and husband, Brad of Chandler, TX; Lisa Chrisman and husband, Joe of Winfield; his grandchildren, Hollie Neighbors of Derby; Kelly Jacques and husband, Martin of Lawrence; Levi Chrisman of Winfield; Rebecca Chrisman and partner, Brandon Beyard of Winfield; John Ross Lumbert of Andover; Jared Lumbert and wife, Sabra of Rose Hill; Rachel Love and husband, Eric of Rose Hill; Kaitlyn Lumbert of Rose Hill; Waylon Lumbert of Winfield; Sarina Proctor of Kingwood, TX; Celina Banks of Houston, TX; and his great grandchildren, Emmy, Abe, Lucy, Bryon, Kevin, Isla, Scott, Ruth, and one great grandson on the way.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by a son Steven Lee Lumbert, his sister Carole Grant, and his brother Phillip "Max" Lumbert.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 6, 2023, at Central Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield on Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.
A memorial has been established in Howard's name for Gentiva Hospice or New Hope Fellowship Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
