Obituary

HERBERT F. BRUNTON, 87, of Cambridge, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, January 10, 2014 at William Newton Hospital.

Born September 25, 1926 north of Cambridge, he was the son of Beecher Glen and Susie Jane (Clover) Brunton. He was raised in Cambridge. Herb entered the United States Navy on December 4, 1944. He served during WWII, receiving a Victory Medal and an American Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged on July 13, 1946.

Herb was united in marriage to Esta Lee Howe on August 10, 1950 at the Presbyterian Church in Wichita. The couple made their home in Cambridge. Herb worked for Smith-Moon Steel for 35 years. It later became Struther Wells, from which he retired in 1988. Following Esta Lee's death in 2008, he continued to make his home in Cambridge.

He was very active in the Cambridge community, serving on the Cambridge City Council and the local school board. He also served on the Cowley County Community College Advisory Board and was active in the Cambridge Senior Citizen Center. Herb was passionate about the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing. He cared about others and enjoyed helping people when he could. He also enjoyed playing baseball while growing up and was an avid KU basketball fan.

His daughter: Jan Grow and husband, Don of Afton, OK;
His brothers: Floyd Brunton of Fall River, KS; Beecher Brunton of Burden; and Robert Brunton and wife, Peg of Wichita;
His sisters: Ruth Brunton of Dublin, CA; Phyllis Wade of Livermore, CA; and Glendoris Mundy of Sedan;
His sisters-in-law: Virginia Trogdon and husband, Glen of Grenola; and Judy Rakestraw and husband, LeRoy of Winfield;
His grandchildren: Jason Brunton of El Dorado; and Sam and Alex Brunton of Blue Springs, MO; and
numerous nieces and nephews.

Herb was preceded in death by his brothers: Paul, Willis, Frank and Vernon, two infant children and a grandson, Doug Grow.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Cambridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made through the funeral home to the Cambridge Presbyterian Church.
