Obituary

Hazel Pauline Young, 93, of Dexter, Kansas, passed away Monday evening, March 25, 2024, at Winfield Senior Living.

Born July 21, 1930, in Ulysses, Kansas, she was the daughter of Abraham and Caroline (Berger) Lohrenz.  She was raised in the Vernon community, graduating from Yates Center High School in 1948.

Hazel was united in marriage to Clarence E. "Ed" Young on July 30, 1950, in Yates Center.  The couple made their first home in Yates Center and moved to rural Dexter in 1961.  Hazel worked for a short time as a cook for the Dexter School system before owning and operating Y Bar Drive-In.  Hazel made a 22 year career with Grouse Valley Manor where she served as Administrator.  After retiring, she drove a school bus for a number of years.  Ed preceded her in death on October 15, 2015.

She was a member of the Dexter Christian Church, the Dexter Senior Citizens, and the Red Hat Society.  She enjoyed watching KU basketball and Kansas City Chiefs football.  She also enjoyed quilting, gardening, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, and tending to her horses and cows.

Her family includes her daughters, Bonnie Drake of Dexter; Peggy Santiago of Goddard; Terri Tomsche and husband, Steve of Arkansas City; her grandchildren, Matt Drake and family, Megan Morris and family, Katie Jensen and family, Ashlee Tomsche, Karie Bell and family; and her caregiver and great granddaughter, Alyssa Morris.

In addition to her parents and husband, Hazel was preceded in death by her brothers, Don and Willard Lohrenz and son-in-law Bill Drake.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at the Dexter Christian Church.  Interment will follow at the Dexter Cemetery.  A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Monday from 5 to 8 P.M.  The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.

Memorials have been established in Hazel's name for the Dexter Fire Department and the Dexter Senior Citizen Center.  Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
