Hazel "Ernestine" Newton, 92, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, February 06, 2011 at William Newton Hospital.
Born November 06, 1918 in Cambridge, Kansas, she was the daughter of Ernest A. and Nellie F. (Kelso) Craft. She was raised and received her education in Cambridge graduating from Cambridge High School in 1935.
Ernestine was united in marriage to William W. Newton on June 29, 1939 in Sedan, Kansas. The couple made their first home in Cambridge. They later moved to Wichita in 1949. To this union three children were born. The couple later divorced. Ernestine worked for the Internal Revenue Service for over 15 years before going to work at the Law Company Inc. She remained in accounting at the Law Company for over 20 years until retiring in 1986. In 1999 she returned to Cambridge to be near family.
Ernestine was a faithful member of University United Methodist Church in Wichita. After returning to Cambridge she transferred her membership to Grace United Methodist Church, where she continued her faithful service. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Parliamentarians, and Business and Professional Women. She enjoyed square dancing, crocheting, and handiwork.

Her sons: Darwin E. Newton and wife, Kay of Cambridge; Carol Dean Newton of Jacksonville, FL; and
Her 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents Ernestine was preceded in death by her son Edward Joe Newton, her brothers, James Lamar Craft, and Bill Joe Craft, and her sister, Esther Winifred Craft.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service, in Winfield. Interment will follow at Cambridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 09, 2011. The family will greet visitors from 5:00 to 7:00 that evening.
Memorials have been established in Mrs. Newton's name for University United Methodist Church, Grace United Methodist Church, and for Cumbernauld Village in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
