Harriet J. Young, 97, of Wellington, Kansas, previously of Winfield, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 1, 2017 at the Sumner Regional Medical Center.

Born February 4, 1920 in Winfield, she was the daughter of James and Cresse (Wycoff) Snell. She was raised and received her education in Winfield, attending Winfield High School. As a young woman, Harriet worked for the grocery store in Udall.

She was united in marriage to George W. Young on May 9, 1942 in El Dorado, Kansas. The couple made their first home in Winfield. They moved to Udall in 1953 and Harriet worked at the grocery store there. They returned to Winfield in 1973. Mr. Young preceded her in death on January 5, 1982. Harriet worked in Dietary Service for the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 28 years. She retired in 1990.

She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting and word puzzles. She especially enjoyed listening to the Walnut River String Band play music.

Her son: Dennis Lee Young and wife, Gaye of Winfield;
Her grandson: Cory Young and wife, Kara of Winfield; and
Her great grandson: Chance Walter;

In addition to her parents and husband, Harriet was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Elsie Bolack, her brothers, Walter, Jack, Dick, K.B. and Harry Snell and sisters, Bonnie Louise Snell, Mildred McCallister-Swab and Hetty Mae Snell..

Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Monday evening from 5 to 7 P.M.

The family suggests memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
