Obituary

Haril Wayne Curtis, 82, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday afternoon, October 8, 2024 at William Newton Hospital.

Born March 17, 1942 in Senath, Missouri, Haril was the son of Harvey and Upal (Ferguson) Curtis.  As a young boy, the family moved to Avondale, Arizona, where Haril was raised and received his education.  He then entered the workforce, first helping his parents in the cotton fields and later cleaning and doing janitorial work for the local schools.

Haril was united in marriage to Mary Boutwell on January 1, 1964 in Arizona.  The couple made their home there for a time while Haril worked for various citrus plants.  These citrus plants are where Haril learned his craft of machining. He later became a machinist for Gott Manufacturing Company.  In 1987, Haril decided to remain with the company as it became Rubbermaid and relocate his family to Winfield.  He retired from Rubbermaid in 2004.  Mary preceded him in death on August 7, 2015.

Following retirement, Haril and Mary spent much of their time traveling around to attend southern gospel music festivals together.  He enjoyed playing his guitar and tinkering around outdoors.  Haril was a member of GracePointe Assembly of God Church.  He had the biggest heart for his church, particularly the widows and others in need.  Haril would use his machining abilities and other talents to fix things and even help mow lawns, which he considered his love language and ministry.

His family includes his children, Jeannette Curtis of Topeka; Tammy Cullum and husband, Jonathan of Winfield; Jody Curtis and wife, Alicia of Topeka; his twin sister Helen Defoor and husband, Ken; his sister-in-law Alice Curtis; his grandchildren, Brianna Hosey and husband, C.J.; Chad Cullum; Sean Randall and wife, Kriston; Brooke Askins and husband, Shane; Jacob Cullum and wife, Megan; Elijah Curtis; Jordan Curtis; and his 12 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Haril was preceded in death by a brother Harvey Curtis, a sister Lois Stillwell, and a brother-in-law Billy Stillwell.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Friday, October 25, 2024 at GracePointe Assembly of God Church under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.  Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Samaritan's Purse or to GracePointe Assembly of God Church to be used for anyone in need. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
