Gwen was born August 24, 1935 in Los Angeles, California to Fred W. and Fay M. (Edman) Shatford. She graduated from Marymount High School, West L.A and attended various business colleges to further her education.
Gwen married Donald Lee Lawing on August 7, 1954 in Los Angeles. They first made their home in Lancaster, California. She was also very involved as a Girl Scout Leader for her daughter's group in California, carrying on this tradition as her own mother did. Don's job with General Electric Company led the family to Arkansas City, Kansas in 1968. She retired in 1984, when they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, then returned to Arkansas City to live two years later.
Gwen loved to travel with her husband, being with family, golfing, waterskiing, swimming, cooking meals, bible studies and workouts at exercise classes. Over the years, she belonged to the Women's Gold Association and the Aglaian Club. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church and worked with Helping Hands of the church.
