Grace Richards- 98, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.
Grace was born January 12, 1919 at the family farm in Chautauqua County the daughter of Gilbert Sr. and Nell (Straight) Briggs. She was raised and received her education in Spring Creek and graduated from Sedan High School in 1938. Following graduation, she moved to Winfield and entered St. Mary's School of Nursing, graduating in 1941 as a registered nurse. She worked in numerous areas of nursing. In 1970, she obtained her certification as Nursing Home Administrator, and worked at two homes in Winfield, Wheat Road Lodge and Highland Manor. Grace retired in 1983 after 43 years of service.
She was united in marriage to Dick Richards on June 25, 1939. A daughter was born to this union, Joan. They lived in Winfield the remainder of their lives with the exception of Dick's service time in the Army. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Grace was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Winfield, serving as Elder and other areas of the church. She was a very forgiving and accepting soul. Her hobbies included: quilting, cooking, gardening and playing cards.
She was also a member of St. Mary's Hospital Alumna, St. Joseph Federated Nursing Alumna, American Legion Auxiliary and Friends of the Salvation Army (Bed and Bread).
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her grandson, Patrick Duff; her sisters, Elizabeth Joplin, Maggie Murphy and Cydna McNown; and her brother Gilbert Jr. Briggs.
Her family includes: her daughter, Joan Duff of Fort Worth, TX; her granddaughter, Jenny Scruggs and her husband Lance of Ashville, NC; Her friend, Jerry Pierce of Fort Worth, TX; and her nephews, Calvin Briggs and his wife, Janice of Wichita, and Mike Howe and his wife Tracey of Wichita.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 23, 2017 at Miles Funeral Service. Inurnment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Winfield. Memorials are suggested to Winfield Senior Living Residents' Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home.Visits: 0
