Obituary

Glen Sandbulte, 86, of Winfield, died on Monday, November 27, 2023 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.

Glen was born May 12, 1937, in Carmel, Iowa, the son of William and Rebecca Wesselink Sandbulte. One of 14 children, he grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from Sioux Center High School. He attended junior college at Northwestern College in Orange City, IA and graduated from Central College in Pella, IA in 1960. Glen served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963, during which he was stationed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Returning to Iowa, he taught school briefly and farmed near Carmel. In the late 1960s, Glen moved to Gillette, WY, where he taught school and tried other ventures including sales and part ownership in a Lindsay Co. water softener dealership. In Gillette he met and married Jane Kitch in 1972. They later divorced. In their marriage they raised two sons together, Matthew and Thomas.

In 1979, after residing for a short time in Steen, MN, the family settled in Winfield. He was a Farm Bureau insurance agent in Cowley County and worked in numerous other jobs including lawn care and school bus driving. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir for over 40 years and was active in United Methodist Men. Glen was also a long-time active member of the Kiwanis Club. He volunteered for various causes in the community, including many years as a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels and picking up litter from a stretch of highway near Winfield. He enjoyed singing in community choruses and experiencing folk and bluegrass music at the Walnut Valley Festival. Glen took any opportunity to get together with extended family and with his sons and their families. He especially liked any occasion involving a sporting event, games of carrom, a community dinner, working with his hands, or being out in nature.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents; brothers John, Henry, Howard, Lloyd, and Duane Sandbulte; and sisters Hermina Ykema, Henrietta Draayer, Angeline Korver, Iola Statema, Fonda Kooistra, and Sharon Kats. He is survived by brother Rodney Sandbulte and sister Laura Westra, both of Rock Valley, IA, and sons Matthew and his wife Amy Lippoldt, of Wichita, KS, and Thomas, his wife Jamie, and son, Luke, of Englewood, CO.
