Obituary

GERALDINE E. DAGGETT died on April 28, 2013 at Spring Hill Manor in Grass Valley, California after a brief illness. She was 90. Prior to that she had lived in the Olympia Glade retirement community and at Sierra View Manor both in Grass Valley. She was lovingly cared for by dedicated staff at both Spring Hill and Sierra View.

Gerrie was born March 30, 1923 in Moline, Kansas to Roland and Ruth (Beal) Green. She had one older sister, Lorene. The Green family soon moved to Winfield, Kansas and except for a brief stay in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Gerrie attended school in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School. In her senior year, she met her future husband, Merle L. Daggett, who began his lifelong career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1938. Gerrie and Merle married on May 29, 1941. Shortly after their marriage, World War II began and Merle joined the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater. Gerrie remained in Winfield where she raised their first son, Ron and worked as a telephone operator. In the years after the war, Gerrie and Merle welcomed the arrival of three more children - Brent, Janel and Carol.

Gerrie began working for Binney & Smith Crayola Factory when in opened it's doors in Winfield in 1952, a career that lasted 32 years. She was a charter member of the company's 25 Year Club. Gerrie was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Winfield and served many volunteer positions. Her favorite was caring for the babies in the church nursery. After retirement, Gerrie donated her time to many service organizations including William Newton Memorial Hospital. For a long period she operated the hospital snack bar several evenings a week. Gerrie and Merle enjoyed traveling and took many family vacations including a trip to Holland to visit their daughter, Janel. Gerrie was an avid reader her entire life - she kept many a book shop owner happy. She was also an enthusiastic Kansas Jayhawk basketball fan and thoroughly enjoyed watching Dancing With the Stars. She had the reputation among her children's friends, when they were young, of hosting incredible birthday and slumber parties, complete with taffy pulls and scary ghost stories.

Gerrie will always be remembered by her children as a loving and devoted mother. She often told them of her desire for them to grow, follow their dreams, and lead happy, independent lives. In 1999, after the death of her husband, Gerrie moved to Grass Valley to be close to her son, Brent and his family. She will affectionately be recalled by her four grandchildren as a kind and loving grandmother.

Gerrie is survived by her four children: Ron Daggett and wife, Virginia of Red Bank, NJ; Brent Daggett and wife, Suzie of Nevada City, CA; Janel Daggett and husband, Bobby Campillo of Newark, CA; and Carol Daggett, Watervliet, NY; Her grandchildren are Marc Daggett and wife, Martha of Redland, CA; Sheri Daggett of Red Bank, NJ; Johnny Daggett and wife, Kym of Reno, NV; and Anna Daggett of Nevada City, CA. Her great grandchildren are Rachel and Rebekah Daggett of Redlands, CA. Nieces and nephews include Larry Daggett of Vicksburg, MS; Donna Updegraff of Middletown, PA; LaNita Boyd of Roswell, GA; and Troy Young of Middletown, PA; as well as several grand nieces and nephews.

Gerrie's family would like you to join them in a Celebration of her life at the First Baptist Church in Winfield on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 3:00 P.M. Norman Reeves, a relative of the family will kindly officiate. Burial will be a Highland Cemetery following the service.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hooper & Weaver in Nevada City, CA and Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas.

A Memorial has been established in Gerrie's name for Hospice of the Foothills in Grass Valley, CA. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
