Obituary

George F. Menke, 78, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Sunday morning, April 26, 2020 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.

Born December 2, 1941 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, he was the son of Adolph Herman and Helen (Adams) Menke. He was raised and received his education in Arizona. Following school, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country.

George was united in marriage to Janet L. Duncan on April 10, 1965 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple made their first home in Phoenix, where George began working for O'Malley Lumber. In 1971, he transferred to Albuquerque, New Mexico to become manager of the branch. In 1978, the family moved to Winfield, Kansas to be near Janet's family and George began his career at Morton Buildings. He continued with Morton Buildings for over 36 years, serving as Yard Manager and retiring as Traffic Manager in 2004. Janet preceded him in death on September 22, 2009.

As a young man, George was baptized in the Lutheran Church. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed visiting with friends, going camping, and attending the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival.

His family includes his daughter Debra L. Burdette and husband, Dwight of Grenola; his son Shawn A. Menke and wife, Jennifer of Florissant, MO; his five grandchildren, Megan Hahner and husband, Justin of Grenola; Morgan Burdette and Justin Lupfer of Garden City; Mattie Burdette of Grenola; Tyler Menke of Florissant, MO; Emma Menke of Florissant, MO; his sisters, Dottie Menke Bjorkman of Tucson, AZ; Betty Menke Bushong of Tucson, AZ; his brothers, Raymond Menke and wife, Marian of Sedona, AZ; David Paulsen and wife, Ronnelle of Austin, TX; his sister-in-law Eileen Cummings and husband, Joe of Winfield; three great grandchildren, Kaylynn Wedman, Sterling Hahner, and Briar Hahner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by a brother Hank "Marty" Paulsen.

Family graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. A public memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials have been established in George's name for Good Shepherd Hospice and for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3544. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
