Obituary

GEORGE D. BUCKMAN, 91, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday evening, September 4, 2010 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.

Born on June 6, 1919, in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Robert A. and Avice(Gibbs) Buckman. His father passed away when George was only 4 years old. He was raised and received his education in Winfield.

He was united in marriage on April 6, 1939 in Newkirk, Oklahoma to Thelma Rowe. The couple made their home in Winfield. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Buckman proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a MoMM 3/c on a Landing Craft Infantry gunboat during the Okinawa invasion. George was employed at Snyder Clinic in Winfield for 30 years before retiring. Mrs. Buckman preceded him in death on May 15, 2009.

He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Winfield. George also was a member of the American Legion Post #10 for over 50 years, the Masonic Lodge for 50 years and the LCI National Association. He was also a member of the Walnut Valley Old Time Pickers, Fiddlers and Singers. He loved camping with his friends, traveling to most of the United States, going on cruises, wood-working, fixing almost anything and his Clinic friends.

His family includes:
His daughter: Janet Buckman of Emporia, KS;
His son: Larry Buckman of Hutchinson, KS;
His grandsons: Eric Buckman of Ozwakie, KS; and Alan Buckman and Lance Buckman, both of Sterling, KS;
His 3 great-grandsons, 1 great-granddaughter, 1 great-great-granddaughter; and
His sister: JoAnne Marble of Tucson, AZ.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Joshua Buckman; his brothers, Ernest Buckman and Jack Buckman; and his sisters, Pearl Marble Bailey and Velma Ross.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Highland Cemetery. Military and Masonic committal honors will be held there. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in George's name be made to the Kansas Veterans Home. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
