Gary Smith, 65, of Arkansas City, Kansas, passed away July 1, 2026, at his home.
Born August 20, 1960, in Arkansas City, he was the son of Walter A. and Ellen L. (Fishburn) Smith. He was raised and received his education in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1978. He then took welding classes at Cowley County Community College.
On July 11, 1981, he married Deby Key and to this union, two sons were born. The couple later divorced. Gary married Letty Molina on May 26, 1986, at Central Baptist Church in Winfield. The couple made their first home in Winfield before moving to Arkansas City. To this union, a daughter was born. The couple later divorced.
Gary worked as a welder at both Gordon Piatt and Struthers Thermoflood. He later became a manager at Wal-Mart, managing stores in Winfield, Arkansas City, Chicago, Illinois, and Oklahoma City. After leaving Wal-Mart, he returned to Arkansas City where he worked as a cook at Brick’s. He attended Northside Baptist Church. When he was young, he enjoyed playing tennis and playing the guitar. He also enjoyed camping, watching old movies and tv shows, and visiting with family and friends.
He is survived by his children, Ryan Smith and wife, Jubentina of Mendota, IL; Chris Smith of Arkansas City; Jessica Banta and husband, Isaac of Arkansas City; Robert DeLeon; his brothers, Gerald Smith of Springfield, MO; David Smith of Arkansas City; and his grandchildren, Mark, Gabby, Bella, and Jax Banta; Alyssa, Kadyn, Dylan, and Zayden Smith; Carly, Kale, Lionardo, and Heavenly Smith.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will hold graveside memorial services at 10:00 AM, on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Hope Cemetery in Arkansas City. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. A lunch will follow the graveside at 11:00 AM at Northside Baptist Church.
