Gary Nash Sharer, 78, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Monday evening, September 8, 2025, at his home.
Born July 1, 1947, in Arkansas City, Kansas, he was the son of Phillip David and Mary Virginia (Sherwood) Sharer. His family lived in Walton, Kansas until moving to Newton during his Senior year of high school. He graduated from Newton High School in 1965. As a teenager, Gary worked on Grandpa Charlie Sherwood's farm. He then worked at Skyline Trailer Factory until being drafted into the United States Army in 1966. He proudly served his country as a Large Equipment Operator during Vietnam until receiving an honorable discharge in 1969. He later attended Wichita State University, receiving a degree in General Liberal Studies in 1976.
Gary was united in marriage to Marilyn K. Bogner on June 3, 1975, in Wichita. The couple made their home in Winfield. Gary worked for Philip Bogner from 1977 until 1993, for Lois Bogner from 1993 to 2003, and for Rod Long from 2003 until retiring in 2012. He also raised cattle for his family.
He was a member of the Flatland Frisbee Association and the American Legion in Newton. He greatly enjoyed attending the Walnut Valley Festival beginning in 1976 and continuing until his health no longer allowed. He loved playing the guitar and making music with friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife.
His family includes his wife Marilyn Sharer of Winfield; his son, Mike Sharer and wife, Lynette of Memphis, TN; his grandchildren, Codi Lynn Marshall and Cory Sharer; his seven great grandchildren; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Glenda Sharer; Ed and Kathy Bogner; Susan and Jim Finney; Leigh Ann and Dave Tasker; double cousins, Art and Steve Sherwood; and many nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his father Phillip Sharer, mother Mary McCune, and brothers, Dave, Mark, and Craig Sharer.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Rose Valley Cemetery. The family asks all Bluegrass lovers to wear your tie-dye shirts and blue jeans.
Memorials have been established in Gary's name for Harry Hynes Hospice and for Disabled American Veterans. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
