Obituary

Garold "Gary" Butler, 81, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, December 13, 2018 at the home he built and lived in, surrounded by his family.

Born April 16, 1937 on a farm in Dexter, Kansas, he was the son of Wesley Hiram and Helen Fay (Fleshman) Butler. The family moved to rural Winfield and Gary attended elementary school at Frog Hollow School and later South Walnut. He graduated Winfield High School in 1955. Gary was united to his high school sweetheart, Raylene Andes on August 4, 1957 at the First Christian Church in Winfield. The couple made their home in Winfield. Raylene preceded him in death on April 22 of this year.

Gary worked for the City of Winfield in the Water Department before beginning his career at Jarvis Auto Supply. He was an auto/industrial salesman for over 32 years. During his life, Gary served as Master of Winfield Masonic Lodge #110 and District Deputy Grand Master for the 35th District of Kansas Masons. He won several awards while working with the Demolay Chapter, the Grand Cross of Color for the Rainbow Girls. In his church, First Christian Church, now Aviator Church, he served on several boards, was a Deacon, Elder, and Youth Group Sponsor. He did maintenance and was property chair for eight years. He loved wood working, carving and yardwork. He could fix anything.

His family includes his children, Debra Starkey and husband, Tom of Wellington; Susan Mayes and husband, Jim of Hutchinson; Brett Butler and wife, Mary of Winfield; his grandchildren, Shannon Shilling and husband, Travis, Brandon Starkey, Jessica Butler, Zachary Butler; his great grandchildren, Landon, Reagan, and Hudson Shilling; his nephew, Roger King; and niece Marilyn Finuf.

In addition to his parents and wife, Gary was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Audine.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, December 16, from 2 to 5 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 2 to 4.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Kindred Hospice or the Shriner's Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
