Obituary

Freelin L. "Curley" Rollins, 87, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday morning, November 24, 2010 at William Newton Hospital.

Born February 18, 1923 in Denoya, Oklahoma, he was the son of John James and Molena (Waldroop) Rollins. He was raised and received his education in Fairfax, Oklahoma graduating from Fairfax High School. After school he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp, where he proudly served his country in World War II. While in the war he served as a side gunner and a flight mechanic on a B17. He served in the Air Combat Balkans, Naples-Foggia, and Air Defense Europe, Romearno. He received four Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Air Medal with five gold leaf clusters.

Curley was united in marriage to Bonnie McMonigle in 1944 in Morganville, Kentucky. After his Honorable Discharge from the Army Air Corp the couple moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma where Curley went to work for Continental Oil Company as a grease maker. He remained with Continental for over forty years until his retirement on April 1st 1985.

He was a member of the Nazarene Church in Ponca City, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying, golf, horseshoes, hunting, fishing, and playing baseball on the Conoco team. He also enjoyed and was well known as a pool player.

His family includes:

His son: Maloy Don Rollins of Winfield;
His daughter: Iris Gail McMonigle of Georgia;
His grandchildren: Rene Smith; Christine Thomson; Lance Rollins; Tammy Moore;
His great grandchildren: Kelsey Smith; Ashley Smith; Kayla Moore; Cadie Thomson; and
Several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters: Lucy; Sarah; and Mary; and his brother Lonnie.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, November 29, 2010 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield.

Memorials have been established in Curley's name for the Veterans of Foreign War, and for Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
